(Information)

Designed for a private art collector, The Gallerist explores how residential space can become an extension of personal brand and lifestyle. Set within a former brewery in rural West Sussex, the project blends bold contemporary design with the historic soul of the original structure to create a home that is both expressive and rooted in its context.

Source
Commissioned by a creative couple, the brief called for a space that would honour the building’s industrial heritage while delivering the aesthetics and comfort of modern living. The ambition was to craft a home that felt both intimate and iconic, one that could showcase a growing art collection while reflecting the clients’ expressive sensibility.

Strategy
As Design Architect and Project Manager at Jackson Design Studio, we approached the project through the lens of experience design and used architecture and interiors to curate daily rituals. We preserved the brewery’s original character while introducing a sculptural addition that amplifies the space and adds fluidity and flexibility.

Solution
The new extension opens into a spacious living area with framed views and curated moments. Exposed brickwork and retained structural elements reflect the building’s past. Bold, geometric forms evoke the feeling of inhabiting a work of art and a tactile palette of timber, copper and textured finishes adds warmth and grandeur. Carefully zoned spaces support open-plan living while offering gallery-like transitions that invite discovery and connection.

Success
The Gallerist has become a benchmark for design-led residential living. It has been featured on Dezeen and Elle Decoration, listed by Unique Homestays as a flagship design stay and is booked year-round as a luxury rural escape. It is celebrated as a model for how private space can reflect lifestyle, taste and personal identity.
